How to Perform Umrah
An illustrated step-by-step guide. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Umrah to Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between them.” [Bukhārī 1773]
Umrah has four pillars, performed in order:
1 · Iḥrām2 · Ṭawāf3 · Saʿy4 · Ḥalq / Taqṣīr
Step 1 — Iḥrām at the Mīqāt
Before crossing the mīqāt (our group stops at Masjid al-Mīqāt on the way to Makkah):
1. Make ghusl (or wuḍū), trim nails, remove unwanted hair beforehand.
2. Men: two plain white unstitched cloths (izār & ridā'), no head cover. Women: ordinary modest clothing of any colour — the face is left uncovered and gloves are not worn while in iḥrām.
3. Pray two rakʿas if it is not a disliked time.
4. Make the intention: “Labbayka Allāhumma ʿUmrah” — and begin the talbiyah, repeating it until you reach the Kaʿbah.
While in Iḥrām, avoid
RulesPerfume or scented products · cutting hair or nails · hunting · marriage proposals or intimacy · arguing and foul speech. Men only: no stitched garments and no covering the head. Women only: no nīqāb (face veil) or gloves — the head remains covered as usual.
Step 2 — Ṭawāf · 7 Rounds
Ṭawāf — begin and end each round at the Black Stone corner · Kaʿbah on your left
Enter with wuḍū. At the Black Stone line, face the Kaʿbah, raise your hand towards it and say “Bismillāhi wa-Allāhu Akbar” — then walk with the Kaʿbah on your left. Men: uncover the right shoulder (iḍṭibāʿ) for the whole ṭawāf and walk briskly (raml) in the first three rounds only. Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone recite “Rabbanā ātinā fid-dunyā ḥasanah…”. After the 7th round: pray two rakʿas behind Maqām Ibrāhīm (al-Kāfirūn, then al-Ikhlāṣ) and drink Zamzam.
Step 3 — Saʿy · 7 Lengths
Saʿy — each direction counts as one length · Ṣafā → Marwah = 1 · ends at Marwah after 7
Approaching Ṣafā, recite “Inna ṣ-Ṣafā wal-Marwata min shaʿā'irillāh”. On Ṣafā, face the Kaʿbah, praise Allah and make duʿā' — then walk to Marwah. Between the two green lights, men hasten the pace. Repeat duʿā' on each mount. Wuḍū is recommended but not required for saʿy.
Step 4 — Ḥalq or Taqṣīr
Men: shave the head (afḍal — greater reward) or trim the hair evenly from all over. Women: gather the hair and cut about a fingertip's length from the ends. With this, the iḥrām restrictions are lifted and your Umrah is complete — taqabbal Allāh! May Allah accept it from you.
Practical tips
SistersStay with your group and keep your coloured headscarf and group tag visible · if the iqāmah is called mid-ṭawāf, pray then resume from where you stopped · upper floors and wheelchair paths count fully · sip Zamzam often · menstruating sisters delay ṭawāf but may do all other parts of the journey — speak to Dr. Naila privately for guidance.
The Rawḍa & Masjid an-Nabawi
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Between my house and my minbar lies a garden from the gardens of Paradise.” [Bukhārī 1195 · Muslim 1390]
The Rawḍa ash-Sharīfah is the area between the Prophet's ﷺ blessed grave (his home, the room of ʿĀʾisha راضي الله عنها) and his minbar — recognised today by its distinctive green carpets among the mosque's red ones.

The Blessed Grave
The Prophet ﷺ passed away in the room of his wife ʿĀʾisha (raḍiya Llāhu ʿanhā) and was buried where he died. His closest companions were later laid beside him: Abū Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq, then ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiya Llāhu ʿanhumā). The chamber is enclosed by the golden lattice screen you see today, beneath the famous Green Dome. Give salām facing the grave calmly and softly — the greetings are in your Duʿās for Every Moment section.
The Minbar
The Prophet ﷺ first gave khuṭbah leaning on a palm trunk. When a three-step minbar was made for him, the abandoned trunk wept audibly until he embraced it — remembered at the Ḥannānah pillar. The ornate marble minbar standing today (gifted by the Ottoman Sultan Murad III in 998 AH / 1590 CE) marks the same blessed spot, and it is one boundary of the Rawḍa itself.
The Miḥrāb an-Nabawī
Set into the qibla wall of the Rawḍa, the Prophet's miḥrāb marks where he ﷺ led the prayer after the qibla was turned towards Makkah. The decorated niche itself was added by later generations, but the place of his prayer is what is honoured — imams of the Ḥaram still lead prayer from this area.
The Pillars (Usṭuwānāt)
1 · Pillar of ʿĀʾisha — the Prophet ﷺ prayed here for a time after the qibla changed; Abū Bakr and ʿUmar would also pray by it. ʿĀʾisha indicated its virtue to the youth of her family.
2 · Pillar of Tawbah — Abū Lubābah tied himself here, refusing to move until Allah revealed the acceptance of his repentance. A place of hope for every one of us.
3 · Pillar of as-Sarīr — where the Prophet's ﷺ bed (sarīr) of palm leaves was placed during his iʿtikāf in Ramadan.
4 · Pillar of al-Ḥars — the guard post where ʿAlī and other companions kept watch over the Prophet ﷺ, until Allah revealed: “Allah will protect you from the people” [5:67].
5 · Pillar of al-Wufūd — where the Prophet ﷺ received the delegations (wufūd) of Arabia and taught them Islam.
6 · Pillar of al-Ḥannānah — at his muṣallā, marking where the weeping palm trunk once stood — the dearest spot of his prayer after the miḥrāb area.
Men's & Women's Sections
Visiting the Rawḍa now requires a (free) permit booked through the Nusuk app — your retreat team arranges the sisters' group slot, so watch the group chat for your time. The mosque has dedicated women's prayer halls and entrances on the northern side, and the Rawḍa opens to women in reserved sessions (typically morning and night windows), fully separate from the men's times. Men enter the Rawḍa area from the front of the mosque near Bāb as-Salām and give salām passing the grave towards Bāb al-Baqīʿ.
